How we chose
For small businesses we weighted ease of setup (40%), transparent public pricing (20%), QuickBooks depth (15%), mobile app quality (15%), and value at the entry plan (10%). Anything quote-only or north of $10K/year upfront was excluded unless it had a sub-$200/mo entry SKU.
Data sources: vendor pricing pages, G2, Capterra, QuickBooks App Store listings, and hands-on trials where available. All pricing reflects rates published as of April 2026.
1. Jobber — best all-around for most small contractors
Jobber remains the default answer for 1–15 technician home-service businesses. Plans start at $39/mo (Core, 1 user) and scale to $169/mo (Connect) and $349/mo (Grow) with tiered feature unlocks. The 14-day free trial needs no credit card, and most operators are quoting and invoicing on day one. Two-way QuickBooks Online sync is included on all paid plans.
Where it wins: transparent pricing, polished mobile app, integrated payments (2.9% + 30¢), client hub, and automations. Where it loses: per-user pricing gets pricey at 15+ techs and reporting is thinner than ServiceTitan or BuildOps. Read the full Jobber review or compare Jobber vs Housecall Pro.
2. Housecall Pro — best if QuickBooks comes first
Housecall Pro is the sharpest choice if automatic 2-way QuickBooks Online sync is your number-one requirement. The Basic plan runs $79/mo for one user, Essentials $189/mo for up to 5 users, and Max is quote-only. Mobile UX is excellent and dispatch is intuitive for residential HVAC, plumbing, and electrical trades.
It wins on payments-plus-books integration, customer follow-ups, and marketing automation. It stumbles on commercial/multi-crew workflows, on reporting depth, and on per-seat economics above 8 users. See the Housecall Pro review for the full breakdown.
3. Kickserv — cheapest credible pick
Kickserv has a genuinely useful free tier (up to 2 users, limited features) and paid plans from $59/mo (Lite) up to $239/mo (Business). It syncs with QuickBooks Online and Desktop, handles basic estimate-to-invoice, and is easy to learn. Reporting and mobile are lighter than Jobber, but pricing is hard to beat. Full Kickserv review here.
4. FieldPulse — best mobile experience
FieldPulse (from $139/user/mo) is one of the fastest-improving platforms in the SMB tier. Mobile-first design, strong proposals, GPS tracking, and timesheets make it excellent for on-the-truck workflows. QuickBooks Online sync is solid. It’s worth a trial if your crew lives on their phones. See the FieldPulse review.
5. Workiz — best for phone-heavy dispatch
Workiz (from $198/mo for Standard, 5 users) has a strong built-in phone system (Workiz Phone) and call-tracking — invaluable if you run marketing and want attribution. Good for locksmiths, garage-door, junk removal, and appliance repair. Read the Workiz review.
6. AccuLynx — best if you do roofing
If you’re a residential roofer, AccuLynx (quote-only, typically $250+/user/mo with an annual contract) is purpose-built: EagleView integration, supplier catalogs (SRS, ABC, Beacon), SmartEstimator, and insurance-claim workflows. Overkill for general handymen but superb inside roofing. Full AccuLynx review.
7. LMN — best for landscaping margins
LMN (from $297/mo Pro plan) is built around the green industry’s estimating and crew-timesheet reality. Job-costing and budget-vs-actual are the core attraction. LMN review.
8. Method:CRM — best QuickBooks-native CRM
If QuickBooks is the center of gravity and you need real-time 2-way sync (including QuickBooks Desktop), Method:CRM ($25–$85/user/mo) is the purest match. Less ‘field service’ and more ‘QB-powered CRM with light field workflow.’ See the Method:CRM review.
Who we didn't recommend (and why)
ServiceTitan, BuildOps, and FieldEdge are outstanding platforms but start around $398/user/mo or require annual contracts that don’t fit most sub-10-tech operators. Salesforce Field Service, IFS, Oracle Field Service, and SAP Field Service Management are enterprise tools — wrong tier unless you have 50+ techs and Salesforce or SAP already installed.
Buying tips for small businesses
Insist on a no-credit-card trial. If a vendor won’t let you kick the tires, they usually have contract-first commercials and 6–12 month lock-in.
Check QuickBooks depth, not just ‘integrates with QB.’ Ask whether invoices, payments, tax, customers, and items all sync automatically and bi-directionally. Many platforms support one-way customer push only.
Test the mobile app first. Your techs will use it 8 hours a day. If they hate it after 48 hours, the office ROI won’t save the deployment.
Budget for processing fees separately. Integrated payments at 2.9% + 30¢ can equal or exceed your software bill at $50K+ monthly volume.
Frequently asked questions
What's the cheapest field service software for small business?
Kickserv has a free plan for up to 2 users and paid plans from $59/mo. Jobber Core at $39/mo is the cheapest full-featured starting point for a solo operator.
Which field service software has the best QuickBooks integration?
For QuickBooks Online: Housecall Pro and Jobber both offer strong 2-way sync. For QuickBooks Desktop: Method:CRM has the deepest real-time sync of any CRM-oriented tool.
Do I need field service software if I only have one truck?
If you're a single-truck solo operator doing 5–15 jobs per week, a combination of QuickBooks Online plus a free tool like Kickserv or Square Invoices can work. Once you add a second tech, the scheduling and dispatch value of Jobber or Housecall Pro pays for itself within a month.
How long does implementation take?
Small-business tools like Jobber, Housecall Pro, and Kickserv should be live within 1–5 business days. Workiz and FieldPulse: 1–2 weeks. Roofing and vertical-specific tools (AccuLynx, LMN): 2–6 weeks for a clean rollout.
What's the difference between 'free trial' and 'free plan'?
A free trial (typically 14 days) lets you test the paid plan in full. A free plan is permanently free but feature-restricted. Kickserv is one of the few FSM platforms with a permanent free tier.
Should I pick a vertical-specific or general-purpose tool?
If you're a pure-play roofer, landscaper, pest controller, or pool-service operator, vertical tools (AccuLynx, LMN, PestPac, Skimmer) bring workflows you'd otherwise have to build. If you run a mixed shop, general tools (Jobber, Housecall Pro) win on flexibility.
